There is a moment in the Sermon on the Mount where Jesus stops being merely challenging and becomes what can only be described as impossible. He has already told His listeners to abandon anger, flee lust, keep every promise, and refuse retaliation. Each of those demands is difficult enough on its own. But then He lands the final blow: "Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect." Matthew 5:48 calls us not to incremental improvement, not to being slightly better

There is a sin most of us will never commit. We will never take a life with our hands, never stand before a judge charged with murder, never carry the weight of that particular guilt. And because of that, we feel relatively safe when the conversation turns to the sixth commandment. We nod along. We move on. We feel excused.
